April 18, 2007: Top 10 Myths About Islam
Islam is a widely-misundertood religion. Those who are unfamiliar with the faith often have misunderstandings about its teachings and practices. Common misconceptions include that Muslims worship a moon-god, that Islam is oppressive against women, or that Islam is a faith that promotes violence. Here we bust these myths and expose the true teachings of Islam.
1) Muslims worship a moon-god
Some non-Muslims mistakenly believe that Allah is an "Arab god," a "moon god," or some sort of idol. Allah is the proper name of the One True God, in the Arabic language. The most fundamental belief that a Muslim has is that "There is only One God," the Creator, the Sustainer -- known in the Arabic language and by Muslims as Allah. Arabic-speaking Christians use the same word for the Almighty.
2) Muslims don't believe in Jesus
In the Qur'an, stories about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ (called 'Isa in Arabic) are abundant. The Qur'an recalls his miraculous birth, his teachings, and the miracles he performed by God's permission. There is even a chapter of the Qur'an named after his mother, Mary (Miriam in Arabic). However, Muslims believe that Jesus was a fully human prophet and not in any way divine himself.
3) Most Muslims are Arabs
While Islam is often associated with Arabs, they make up only 15% of the world's Muslim population. The country with the largest population of Muslims is Indonesia. Muslims make up 1/5 of the world's population, with large numbers found in Asia (69%), Africa (27%), Europe (3%) and other parts of the world.
4) Islam oppresses women
Most of the ill-treatment that women receive in the Muslim world is based on local culture and traditions, without any basis in the faith of Islam. In fact, practices such as forced marriage, spousal abuse, and restricted movement directly contradict Islamic law governing family behavior and personal freedom.
5) Muslims are violent, terrorist extremists
Terrorism cannot be justified under any valid interpretation of the Islamic faith. The entire Qur'an, taken as a complete text, gives a message of hope, faith, and peace to a faith community of one billion people. The overwhelming message is that peace is to be found through faith in God, and justice among fellow human beings. Muslim leaders and scholars do speak out against terrorism in all its forms, and offer explanations of misinterpreted or twisted teachings.
6) Islam is intolerant of other faiths
Throughout the Qur'an, Muslims are reminded that they are not the only ones who worship God. Jews and Christians are called "People of the Book," meaning people who have received previous revelations from the One Almighty God that we all worship. The Qur'an also commands Muslims to protect from harm not only mosques, but also monasteries, synagogues, and churches -- because "God is worshipped therein."
7) Islam promotes "jihad" to spread Islam by the sword and kill all unbelievers
The word Jihad stems from an Arabic word which means "to strive." Other related words include "effort," "labor," and "fatigue." Essentially Jihad is an effort to practice religion in the face of oppression and persecution. The effort may come in fighting the evil in your own heart, or in standing up to a dictator. Military effort is included as an option, but as a last resort and not "to spread Islam by the sword."
8) The Quran was written by Muhammad and copied from Christian and Jewish sources
The Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of two decades, calling people to worship One Almighty God and to live their lives according to this faith. The Qur'an contains stories of Biblical prophets, because these prophets also preached the message of God. Stories are not merely copied, but the oral traditions are referred to in a way that focuses on the examples and teachings that we can learn from them.
9) Islamic prayer is just a ritualized performance with no heartfelt meaning
Prayer is a time to stand before God and express faith, give thanks for blessings, and seek guidance and forgiveness. During Islamic prayer, one is modest, submissive and respectful to God. By bowing and prostrating ourselves to the ground, we express our utmost humility before the Almighty.
10) The crescent moon is a universal symbol of Islam
The early Muslim community did not really have a symbol. During the time of the Prophet Muhammad, Islamic caravans and armies flew simple solid-colored flags (generally black, green, or white) for identification purposes. The crescent moon and star symbol actually pre-dates Islam by several thousand years, and wasn't affiliated with Islam at all until the Ottoman Empire placed it on their flag.

Top positions in bed everyone should know...
Yes it is true that Muslims don't believe Jesus is "the son of God" But Jesus is A messenger Of Allah. And As a messenger he was Sent with the same message " worship only Allah"..
But people changed the message and poisoned the people by telling them to worship Jesus as God...
Jesus (Isa) Is mentioned in the quran Also
Allah says “ And surely they slew him not. But Allah raised him unto Himself.”
(Holy Qur'an, Surah Nisaa, Verse 157-158
So I wanted add to the misconception About Jesus and Islam…
I have started to study DEEPLY islam since the "9/11 TWIN TOWERS"
I had already a large scientific/ cultural/ philosophical/ historical/ psychoanalysis background.
I have studied this "religion" during some 5 years, 4 hours per day.
My conclusion is very negative.
Islam is "a stupd sect like other sects", a preach of violence hidden under soft poetic words, a teaching of perfidy, etc, etc.
I understand why peopl that learn/adopt "this"... become stupid.
How come that non-muslims must pay additional taxes in the muslim countries? Or what about the laws that says that a muslim converted to another religion must appear before a court?
It seams to me that your holly book have justification for anything you want to do: peace for those who want to read peace and war, revenge, killing for those who need war in that particular moment.
"Oh...jihad...let's kill all those infidels, this is the real way the prophet lived!"..I've heard this preached ...

[3:85] And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.
However, even though the Creator has clearly specified that no other way of life is acceptable to Him except Islam (i.e. submission to Him as embodied in the Qur'an and Sunnah), He has also commanded the Muslims to be tolerant of people who espouse other creeds. From the Sunnah, specifically in the study of the Sunnah called Al-Awsat by Al-Tabarani, we find regarding those non-Muslims living in the Islamic state,
The Messenger of Allah (saas) said, "One who kills a non-Muslim person under protection (Arabic: dhimmi) will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise."
Also from the Sunnah, specifically in a report from Al-Khatib, we find that the Messenger of Allah (saas) also said:
Whoever hurts a non-Muslim person under protection, I am his adversary, and I shall be an adversary to him on the Day of Resurrection.
In short, Islam is intolerant of false ideas, however it is tolerant of the people who hold to those ideas. One historical example of Muslims living up to the standard of Islam can be found from the time of the Spanish Inquisition. During that disaster sprung by misguided Catholics, some Spanish Jews fled to Muslim Turkey and to this day, there is a community of Spanish-speaking Jews in Turkey. Another example may be found during one of the Crusader invasions from Western Europe. Some of the the Catholic Western European knights were so likely to rape, murder, and pillage the Jews and Orthodox Christians, that when the Muslims won, they were treated as a liberating force by those non-Muslims
You are referring to jizya, or the taxing of non-muslims. This ensures that non-Muslims are also responsible for paying charity. Muslims have to pay zakat (charity) every year, roughly 2.5% of their savings. The zakat is a way of making sure the poor are taken care of. Since Muslims cannot force Islam on others, (i.e. Muslims cannot force non-muslims to pay zakat) the jizya provides a proper channel of collecting charity from non-muslims. If you have a problem with being obliged to help the poor, you are the one that is not tolerant, not Muslims.

Is this a peaceful religion? I think not!
"But people changed the message and poisoned the people by telling them to worship Jesus as God..."
So Muhammed took the Word of God (Islam) 700 years after Jesus spoke it (Christianity) and a Muslim says the Christians "poisoned the people"?
Two sides of the same coin -- a coin of little value.
im born to a christian mother/muslim father.
i consider myself a muslim. i have read both the bible and the quran, therefore im not biased .
the wrong message people get about islam, is all due to the people.
people misinterpret the wording of the quran. it is changed to suit ones self motive,
ur boss tells you to call a company to get a refund of an item purchased that was faulty...
the company refuses to refund.
you have 2 options.
1. settle and get back to your boss with the answer, maybe he will help you think of another way.
2. go there and kick the shit out of the people in the other company till u get ur refund.then say in court, my boss told me and this was the only way i knew how..
option one is following your guide, and asking when something is unclear or unresolved.
option 2 is making the decision YOURSELF to kick the shit out of other people.
so the moral of the story is, when one kills, uses violence etc...it's the person who is behind the action...not the religion
Just like violence/terrorists have given a bad name to Islam, what about the Catholic priests who molest children? Does this mean that all catholic people take part in such unacceptable actions? It is once again, the people!
I think everyone who has commented negatively is just seeing what they want to see.If you start to study religion with a closed mind, you're just wasting your time.
And even if you disagree with the religion, this does not warrant you to go around bashing people and beliefs others consider scared.
All I've seen so far, is us Muslims being understanding and civil, and non Muslims being aggressive and using profanity.
i am a student of international affairs and i am muslim so i am faced many times with accusations of Muslims being terrorists..or the religion instigating violence.
but jst regard the comments in here the non Muslim normally use a very violent language ...and seem that they are not interested in hear what teh others are saying inly what they say is the truth..and that's all...so i ask who's intolerant?
another thing don't forget that many times you are confusing local beliefs with Islam..like arabizations or Arabic culture and Islam..that's totally different...
My belief is that we are all the same inside, fear, hate and insecurities are crated by the politicions and our places of worship. Ignorence is the absolute distroyer of mankind.I seems that we all need someone to hate,or feel superior about about.
I pray that people meet each other to show what we are made of and to understand the diversity and beauty of our world.
If someone isn't your religion, and they aren't harming anyone, why should you care what religion they practice? All religions promote the same basic things, (like peace, treat people kindly, etc,) so as long as people are following those basic principles, why should we argue? with eachother?
im glad we are on the right side =) amen

THERE IS ONLY GOD AND HE HAS SENT THE BOOK, READ IT IN ENGLISH AND MAKE UP UR MIND!!!! DONT LISTEN TO ANYONE SEE FOR YOURSELF HOW BEAUTIFUL THE BOOK CALLED THE QURAN IS
Quite a convenient position to be able to quote a holy scripture when rationalizing murder, rape, and torture, and other shameless attrosities against people with a different set of beliefs and ideals that do not cooincide with your own.
Islam directly teaches it's followers intollerance of faith other than the prophet muhammad's teachings, and I for one and tired of politically correctness when one refers to this religion and it's people, a pack of blood thirsty cold blooded killers who force their woman to serve them as slaves deprived of human dignity, and yet do so freely with out the burden of concience or remorse, and all while preaching the word of God.
